Friday 27th September marks National Teaching Assistants’ Day, and across the UK, schools are recognising the remarkable contributions of their teaching assistants (TAs). Whether through classroom support, personalised learning, or fostering pupil wellbeing, TAs are integral to the success of every school.
At Teachers Together, we believe that TAs are more than just assistants—they are educators who play an essential role in shaping the future of students. With their support, classrooms run more smoothly, students feel more understood, and teachers can focus on delivering effective instruction.
The role of TAs has expanded significantly in recent years, reflecting their growing importance within education. According to the latest School Workforce Census, there are nearly 283,000 full-time equivalent TAs working in state-funded schools across England—a number that has more than trebled since 2000. This increase highlights just how vital their contributions have become in ensuring that every child receives the attention and care they need.
Why Teaching Assistants Matter More Than Ever
The work of a TA goes beyond traditional classroom tasks. They support individualised learning, help manage classroom behaviour, and often form trusted relationships with pupils who may require additional support. TAs are the champions of inclusivity, working tirelessly to ensure that no student is left behind.
Whether assisting with complex Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), or offering a reassuring presence in the classroom, TAs make a significant impact on both pupils’ academic outcomes and emotional wellbeing.
A Message of Gratitude
At Teachers Together, we are incredibly proud to work with so many passionate and dedicated teaching assistants. Your commitment to nurturing the potential in every child inspires us every day. Through our free CPD opportunities and specialised training, we aim to support TAs in developing their skills, growing their confidence, and thriving in their careers.
So, to every TA out there, thank you for everything you do. You are the heart of the classroom. 😊
